The Promise of Morning by Ann Shorey

MY THOUGHTS:

The story of Ellie and her journey from great grief back to a full life was one that I really enjoyed. This story helped me realize how strong we all can be if only we will lean on Christ. Without Him, we are weak, but with Him, we are strong. This book is sure to remind you of this very important fact.

ABOUT THIS BOOK:

The Promise of Morning from Ann Shorey takes readers to Beldon Grove on the Illinois frontier in the 1840s. Life isn’t easy here. For Ellie Craig, the graves of her three infant children make it unbearably lonely, despite the love of her husband Matthew. When she uncovers a family secret that suggests she may not be as alone as she thought, Ellie is determined to find the truth.

Meanwhile, Matthew Craig faces controversy in the church he pastors when a man arrives in town claiming to be both a minister and the son of the town's founder. Will Matthew find the courage to reclaim his church? Or will he return to itinerant preaching, leaving Ellie even more alone than before?

Book 2 in the At Home in Beldon Grove series, The Promise of Morning will touch your soul with themes of overcoming tragedy, finding strength to meet daunting challenges, and trusting your heart to love again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ann Shorey is the author of The Edge of Light and has published selections in the Cup of Comfort series and in Chicken Soup for the Grandma's Soul.

Restoration Road: A Journey Back to the Way Things Were Meant To Be

ABOUT THIS WEEK:

Restoration is truly humanity’s deepest desire. From the third chapter of Genesis through the last word of Revelation, the Bible shows us God’s plan to restore what was damaged in the garden. But becoming a believer in Christ does not magically undo all the destruction in a life; it is only the beginning of God’s restoration process.

In Restoration Road, authors Mitch Kruse and Derek Williams take readers on a journey that reconnects them with the deep, inborn desire to live a life of authenticity, which is made possible only when we allow God to restore us from the inside out. As a former world-renowned auctioneer specializing in high-end, rare and classic cars, Kruse imagines each individual life as a master-crafted vehicle that has fallen into disrepair.

“To be restored means to be made new again. Every person, from the CEO to the blue collar worker, the stay-at-home mom to the high school student, struggles with some old patterns of thought and behavior that need to change. The question is, how do we restore what’s old in our lives—the rust that has formed on our purer motivations, the dings that have appeared in our passion for the good, the faded paint of our resolve to love God with all our hearts—to its authentic, original state?”

The answer, Kruse says, lies in our willingness to completely surrender our broken lives, to recognize our great need for God’s redeeming touch and take those first steps down the road to restoration. But this is easier said than done. Restoration Road takes readers step-by-step through the process, drawing on both biblical examples and moments from Kruse’s own restoration journey.

Restoration is a matter of the heart, and Kruse says there are two heart conditions that prevent us from experiencing it. Some of us have sand hearts. Our lawlessness leaves us scattered and difficult to form. Others have stone hearts, so hardened by legalism and the illusion of self-sufficiency that reshaping them requires the use of a severe tool. Restoration happens, Kruse says, when we develop a heart of clay, softened by love and easily reshaped by the hands of its gracious Designer.

Though Restoration Road addresses the universal human condition and will connect with all kinds of readers, Kruse’s experience on his own restoration road will speak especially to men. After becoming the youngest auctioneer and realtor in the world, Kruse embarked on a different restoration road. He was determined to restore his family’s failed high-end auction business and become a billionaire by the age of 40. But he discovered that his veneer of success concealed the heart of a man who put tasks ahead of people, whose deepest desires were not being met. Kruse now holds both graduate and doctoral degrees from Trinity Theological Seminary and has served as both a teaching pastor and a guest speaker for high profile organizations around the world.

At its heart, Restoration Road is a book about mending broken relationships. When we find the proper vertical alignment (between ourselves and God), the horizontal alignment (between ourselves and others) naturally begins to fall into place. With an accompanying study guide and DVD, Restoration Road is an experience designed for groups and individuals, whether stone-hearted or sand-hearted, who have yet to surrender to Christ.

Scattered Petals by Amanda Cabot

MY THOUGHTS:
This author was new to me, but she has definitely moved onto my favorites list. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. It was a fast read that was entertaining, but also offered you a good message. If you like Western fiction, this entire series is one that you want to jump into.

ABOUT THIS BOOK:

In Scattered Petals, author Amanda Cabot offers readers the last book in her beloved Texas Dreams series.

Longing for adventure, Priscilla Morton leaves Boston and heads for Texas, never dreaming that the adventure she seeks will leave her badly injured and her parents dead. Priscilla is determined to rebuild her life and make a home for herself in the beautiful Hill Country. But the bandits who took her parents' lives also destroyed her hope for the future.

Ranch foreman Zachary Webster knows what the future holds for him, and it's not a woman like Priscilla. She deserves a cultured East Coast gentleman, not a cowboy who's haunted by memories of his mistakes. The best thing he can do is leave her alone.

When necessity draws them together, Priscilla and Zach begin to forge a life that, like the scattered petals of her childhood, is filled with promise. But then the past intrudes, threatening their very existence.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Amanda Cabot is an accomplished author under various pen names and a popular speaker. The author of Paper Roses, she is also a charter member of Romance Writers of America, the co-founder of its New Jersey chapter, a member of the ACFW, and an avid traveler.

History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years DVD Series

ABOUT THIS SERIES:

A History of Christianity, a six-part series presented by Diarmaid MacCulloch, an Oxford history professor whose books about Cranmer and the Reformation have been acclaimed as masterpieces.

A History Of Christianity will reveal the true origins of Christianity and delve into what it means to be a Christian. Intelligent, thought-provoking and magisterial in its scope the series will uncover how a small Jewish sect that preached humility became the biggest religion in the world.

Most Christian histories start with St Paul's mission to Rome, but Diarmaid MacCulloch argues that the first Christianity stayed much closer to its Middle-Eastern roots. He describes not only the main ideas and personalities of Christian history, its organization and spirituality, but how it has changed politics, sex, and human society.

The series includes subjects from Palestine in the first century to India in the third, from Damascus to China in the seventh century and from San Francisco to Korea in the twentieth.

MacCulloch is one of the most widely travelled of Christian historians and conveys a sense of place as arrestingly as he does the power of ideas. He presents the development of Christian history differently from any of his predecessors. He shows how, after a semblance of unity in its earliest centuries, the Christian church divided during the next 1400 years into three increasingly distanced parts, of which the western Church was by no means always the most important: he observes that at the end of the first eight centuries of Christian history, Baghdad might have seemed a more likely capital for worldwide Christianity than Rome. This is the first truly global history of Christianity.

Diarmaid MacCulloch is one of the world's leading historians and Professor of History of the Church and Fellow at St. Cross College Oxford. The series is a BBC co-production with the Open University and Jerusalem Productions.
